Offshore aquaculture, also known as open ocean aquaculture, is an emerging approach to mariculture or marine farming where fish farms are moved some distance offshore.

The farms are positioned in deeper and less sheltered waters, where ocean currents are stronger than they are inshore. Existing ‘offshore’ developments fall mainly into the category of exposed areas rather than fully offshore.

Dec 24,  · Offshore aquaculture is still an industry in its infancy, which makes it tempting to focus on information gaps and conclude that more research is necessary to understand its interactions with the surrounding environment. And while this is an area ripe with research opportunities, we can make informed siting decisions today about farm location Cited by: Apr 22,  · Offshore Aquaculture and Its Potential Relevance.

Aquaculture continues to be the fastest growing food producing sector in the world and it is expected to bridge the future global supply–demand gap for aquatic food.

1 However, this is a great challenge considering that a large proportion of current aquaculture for food is produced in fresh water and this resource is bound to be very scarce Author: Doris Soto, Carlos Wurmann. Offshore aquaculture development has been a subject of intense. The southeastern United States is home to the largest concentration of saltwater recreational fishing in America. Whether seeking iconic fish to catch for sport or for sustenance, recreational fishing in the Southeast generates more than $15 billion in sales annually for more than million fishermen taking more than 36 million fishing trips every year.

Aquaculture (AQ) -- the raising of fish and shellfish in captivity -- has been confined to near-shore coastal waters or in other water bodies that fall under state regulation.

Recently, there has been interest in expanding AQ to offshore waters, which would involve raising fish and shellfish in the open ocean, and consequently bringing these types of operations under fed. regulation. If a state chose to opt out, it would be refusing to allow any offshore aquaculture to take place in the federal waters adjacent to its state waters. Offshore aquaculture is increasingly viewed as a mechanism to meet growing protein demand for seafood, while minimizing adverse consequences on the environment and other uses in the oceans. aquaculture -- the raising of fish and shellfish in captivity -- has generally been confined to nearshore coastal waters or in other water bodies, such as ponds, that fall under state regulation.
